The short answer: if you need to file a Form 11 for 2025 income, your deadline is Saturday 31 October 2026 or Wednesday 18 November 2026 if you file and pay through Revenue’s ROS system or using FastTax.ie.

Important to note, the ROS extension only applies if you do both of these online:

  • file your 2025 Form 11 return, and
  • pay your 2025 balance and your 2026 preliminary tax

Do only one of those two things through ROS, say, you file online but post a cheque and the extension doesn’t apply. Your deadline reverts to 31 October 2026.

If you…Your deadline is
File and pay entirely through ROS18 November 2026
File or pay by any other method31 October 2026

Who actually needs to file a Form 11?

You’re generally required to file if any of the following applies to you:

  • You’re self-employed, a sole trader, or a freelancer
  • You’re a PAYE employee, but your non-PAYE income was more than €5,000 net (or €30,000 gross before expenses)
  • You’re a proprietary director: you or your family control 15% or more of a company’s shares
  • You have rental income from an Irish property
  • You have foreign income, or opened a foreign bank account while resident in Ireland
  • You have dividend income or other investment income not already taxed at source

If any of these sound like your situation for the first time this year, it’s worth double-checking rather than assuming PAYE has you covered.

What happens if I miss the deadline?

Revenue applies two separate charges for a late Form 11:

  • Surcharge: 5% of your tax liability (capped at €12,695) if you file within two months of the deadline; 10% (capped at €63,485) if you file later than that.
  • Interest: 0.0219% per day on any tax paid late, regardless of the surcharge.

The surcharge is calculated on your total tax liability for the year, not just the amount you’re late paying, so it adds up faster than it might sound. See more here about what happens if you miss the deadline.

Don’t forget preliminary tax

The same deadline also covers your preliminary tax for 2026 or an upfront payment toward next year’s bill, due at the same time as this year’s balance. It’s easy to budget for only the 2025 amount and be caught short by this second payment, especially in your first year filing.

The dread of the deadline vs the relief is having it handled

Every year, the run-up to this date is the same story: people who are otherwise completely on top of their finances still put off their Form 11 because the process itself feels like the hard part. It isn’t, once someone’s actually walked you through it.

That’s exactly what FastTax.ie does. Whether you want to self-file with guided software (from €145), have an expert review what you’ve done (from €240), or hand the whole thing over and have it filed for you (from €390). Whichever level of support you choose, the outcome is the same: filed correctly, on time, and off your mind for another year.

Form 11 Deadline FAQs

Is the deadline the same for everyone? Yes 31 October 2026 (or 18 November 2026 via ROS) applies to all self-assessed Form 11 filers for the 2025 tax year, regardless of what type of income you’re declaring.

What if I can’t pay my full tax bill by the deadline? Filing on time and paying late is still better than filing late as the surcharge applies to late filing, while only interest applies to late payment. If you’re going to be short, get the return filed on time and talk to Revenue (or your filing service) about the payment separately.

Does this deadline apply to Capital Gainss Tax too? Yes the same 18 November 2026 ROS extension also applies filing your return for Capital Gains made during 2025, even though the payment should already have been made.

I’ve never filed before, where do I even start? Start with what income you actually need to declare, then decide how much of the process you want to do yourself versus hand over. Read our First-Time Filer’s guide.
